School Management Committee

The school management committee consists of a group of professionals from a range of business fields who support the school with its development. The committee is led by the School Supervisor Professor Edmund Kwok and Vice Supervisor Alan Wan.


Prof Edmund S.T.Kwok

If there is one word that sums up Prof Edmund S.T. Kwok’s career to date, it is “pioneer”. Widely acclaimed for his innovative thinking in liberal arts education, he currently serves as Chief Academic Advisor to Beijing Institute of Technology and founding President of its Honors College. A Senior Advisor to International Chinese Academy Education Foundation with Prof Ingrid Lunt of Green Templeton College, Oxford University as Honorary President, Prof Kwok has been a Bye-Fellow of Robinson College, Cambridge University since 1984.

A historian by training, Prof Kwok was educated at New Asia College of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He received a Harvard-Yenching Fellowship to complete his master and doctoral studies at UC- Berkeley where he pursued a double major in modern European and Chinese intellectual history. His doctoral dissertation was on Germany’s Weimar intellectual history.

A man of many accomplishments, Prof Kwok is best known for his pioneering work from 2005 and 2011 as the founding Executive Vice-President of United International College, the first joint venture institution between Hong Kong and the Mainland in Zhuhai. There, from scratch, he created a new model of “Four Point Education” for an innovative, holistic liberal arts education in Mainland China, with English as the teaching language, backed up by an 8-semester credit-bearing system that still stands in all its splendor.

His unprecedented achievements in the development of liberal arts education on the mainland drew international attention. The Chronicle of Higher Education gave him an emphatic thumbs-up. In June 2011, in recognition of his contributions to the promotion of liberal arts education in China, Augsburg College of Minnesota conferred upon him an honorary doctorate of humanities, the first Chinese academic to be so honored in its 142-year history.

His innovations in education have attracted similar keen interest from global bodies. In August 2017, he was invited to represent the Chinese academia at the UN-sponsored Global Compact for sustainable development China-Japan-Korea Roundtable Conference. Following the conference, he continues to advise the Asia Chapter of the UN Global Compact.

In 2015, Prof Kwok was commissioned to conduct a research project to study the trends of future educational development up to the year 2050. An outcome of this project is a new ecological community model he designed that came with a college town and an educational hub as its core for towns in China. This design was presented at the Alfred Whitehead conference organized by the Center for Process Studies at Claremont, California in May 2015. In the wake of positive responses at the conference, he was invited back to Claremont for a more focused group discussion later that same year.

In 2016, the Center for Process Studies worked together with Prof Kwok to set up a joint center for the promotion of postmodern ecological civilization in Hong Kong.

The project is now being studied for application at the Honors College, bolstered by a strategic alliance with a like-minded leading academic in China and the support of a listed company in Suzhou.

Prof Kwok’s work has also attracted the attention of other national and international educational bodies. They began to seek his service. In 2013-14, he was appointed Vice-Chairman to the board of the Peter Drucker Academy (China) to promote “management as a liberal art” in its executive education programs in China. The following year, he helped Hong Kong University’s Centennial College to establish its school of management and assisted in the design of its curriculum for accreditation. Yet another year later, he advised Hong Kong’s Gratia College and China’s Wuhan College in designing their general education programs. In 2017, he was tapped as a special consultant to Tricor HK Consulting Limited of the Bank of East Asia on the payment and salary system review for Hong Kong’s Open University. Dedicated to the promotion of innovative educational ideas and practices, Prof Kwok founded the Hong Kong International Education Development Foundation where he is currently Chairman. In 2013, he helped Xing Wei College in Shanghai to successfully secure status as a full-scale liberal arts college in Mainland China. Closer to home, he has re-positioned New Asia Arts and Business College as a lifelong learning institution.

With his breadth of knowledge and diversity of interests, Prof Kwok has been courted by countless institutions, private and public, for his advice. In the past thirty years, he has served in a variety of roles ranging from the Antiquities and Monument Board, the Early Release Board, the Museum Advisory Committee to even the Stamp Advisory Board. He has been appointed a visiting scholar to leading Mainland universities, Tsinghua, Peking and Fudan University among them. Formerly appointed a visiting researcher at the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, he has also been an advisor to the Shenzhen Academy of Social Sciences, especially in the area of creative cultural industries. He parlayed his bilateral networks into creating academic exchanges between Mainland and Hong Kong where he was advisor to the Association of Designers and the Hong Kong Association of Industrial Designers.

In his own discipline, Prof Kwok taught comparative modern European and Chinese history at Chung Chi College of the Chinese University of Hong Kong for some 27 years. Even in the traditional discipline of history, he discovered and designed new domains for his interests, including a history of comparative urban cultures, cross-cultural migration, postmodernity and even cyber culture, and of course creative cultural industries. With 27 books and more than 80 journal articles to his credit, Prof Kwok boasts enviable scholarly credentials. While at the Chinese University, he also served as Director of General Education and Dean of Students of Chung Chi College. One of his contributions during his tenure was in developing general education, in particular, the establishment of the Integrated Basic Studies Resource Center for Chung Chi College. As Dean of the Faculty of Arts and University Dean of Students, he poured himself into developing strategic academic relationships with Mainland institutions, as well as

establishing innovative student development programs for the entire university. He is an accomplished academic leader of the first order.
